Umstieg auf Conversations

Deutsche Version

Ich verlasse WhatsApp, da es rechtlich äußerst bedenklich ist und nun auch noch überwacht werden soll. Was bedeutet das genau?

• WhatsApp überträgt die Kontakte aus dem Adressbuch an die Firma WhatsApp. Das ist nach deutschem Datenschutzrecht nur erlaubt, wenn ich vorher die schriftliche Zustimmung jedes Kontakt einhole. Siehe auch »medien-sicher.de
• Zusätzlich werden die Kontaktdaten und weitere Informationen an Facebook weitergegeben. WhatsApp sichert sich durch die AGB auch Rechte an Profilbildern und einigem mehr. Siehe ebenfalls »medien-sicher.de
• Die eigene Telefonnummer kann über Gruppen an Unbekannte weitergegeben werden. Das ist potenziell gefährlich (z. B. wegen Stalking).
• Die Bundesregierung hat vor kurzem beschlossen, dass WhatsApp auf Endgeräten (lies: unseren Telefonen) angegriffen werden soll. Es geht um Überwachung, nicht um Sicherheit. Sonst müsste die Regierung sich dafür stark machen Sicherheitslücken zu schließen statt diese für Trojaner zu nutzen. Siehe z. B. »Zeit

Wir können etwas dagegen tun! Ich bitte deshalb meine Freunde und Verwandten über Conversations (auf Android), ChatSecure (auf iOS) oder Gajim (auf dem Desktop) mit mir zu chatten. Dabei holt man sich eine Jabber-Kennung die wie eine Mail-Adresse aussieht und nicht an die Telefonnummer gebunden ist.

Zur Not geht auch der Chat-Client Signal. Der ist aber an eine Telefonnummer gebunden und ich befürchte, dass früher oder später eine Hintertür durch eine Behörde in den USA in den Client eingebaut wird.

I'm leaving WhatsApp, as it is legally difficult in Germany and now prone to being spied at by the state as well. What does this mean?

• WhatsApp transmits all contacts from the address book to WhatsApp's servers. This is only allowed under german law if I previously get a permit by every contact in my address book in writing.
• Contact info as well as more date is passed along to Facebook. WhatsApp secures rights to our profile pictures and more by their terms and conditions.
• My mobile's number gets passed along to people I don't know by anyone adding me to a group. This is potentially dangerous, think of stalking.
• The german government has recently passed a law to spy upon communications explicitly mentioning WhatsApp and is working on trojans to infect mobile phones. This is clearly aimed at mass surveillance not at security. Security would mean to fix backdoors in a mobile's software not to use them.

We can all do something! I ask all my friends and family to contact me via Conversations (on Android), ChatSecure (on iOS) or Gajim (desktop) in the future. You'll get a jabber-account which looks like an e-mail address and it is not tied to your device.

As a second best choice you can use the chat client Signal (PlayStore on Android, Appstore on iOS). It's tied to a mobile's number. I fear that, sooner or later, agencies in the US are going to have a backdoor installed in it, though.
