Vor kurzem las ich Henry David Thoreaus Walden. Bisher hatte ich nur indirekt von diesem Buch gehört. Es kommt immer wieder in der U.S. amerikanischen Literatur und Popkultur vor.

Nun kann ich sagen: Thoreau ist ein Philosoph der auch bei usn gelesen werden sollte! Er schreibt mit klarem Blick und einfach verständlich. Er bleibt praktisch und lebt nicht in einem Elfenbeinturm. Viele seiner Aussagen bringen die Dinge auf den Punkt. Ein paar Kostproben:

"Simplify, simplify."

"The mass of men lead quiet lives of desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things."

"There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root, and it may be that he who bestows the largest amount of time and money on the needy is doing the most by his mode of life to produce that misery which he strives in vain to relieve."

Seine liebe zur Natur scheint ebenfalls an vielen Stellen durch:

"I walk toward one of our ponds, but what signifies the beauty of Nature when men are base? We walk to lakes to see our serenity reflected in them; when we are not serene, we go not to them."
